AB OBJECTIVE: To study the association of HIV infection with Hepatitis B
and Syphilis in blood donors. METHODS: Screening for HIV, Hepatitis B
surface antigen and syphilis was carried out in 2,31,293 donated blood
units received from 4 blood banks during the last 5 years. Of these,
1,27,342 blood units were received from professional blood donors,
1,03,590 from replacement donors and 341 from voluntary donors. RESULTS:
ELISA test for HIV showed 379 blood units to be positive on initial
testing out of which 117 were repeatedly ELISA positive. Of these 117
samples, confirmatory Western Blot assay has so far been done in 85
samples and sixty of these were positive for HIV I/II. Of the 60 Western
Blot confirmed HIV positive blood samples, 37 have so far been tested
for HBsAg (by ELISA) and syphilis (VDRL and Haemagglutination assay).
None of the samples were HBsAg positive and four samples were positive
for syphilis. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: There may be an association of
syphilis but not Hepatitis B with HIV infection, in blood donors in
India.
